Julie Van Kerckhoven is a visual artist, gardener and herbalist. Through photography, she engages with her immediate surroundings, using her camera as a friend and a helping hand. In recent years, she has been working in and around the worlds of ecology and agriculture, incorporating these into her artistic practice.
Bringer of life — About corn is an artistic investigation into the corn plant. Julie wondered why the plant occupies so much space in the rural landscape, while an emotional or cultural connection seems to be lacking. What does a plant tell us when we are attentive and curious? While sowing and tending to corn herself, Julie went in search of the stories behind corn. These stories range from a lost connection with farmers, food and nature, to neglected histories and climate destruction. Which stories do we want to continue to share?
